Team Responsibilities

The purpose of the DevOps team is to maintain Semafone’s ability to deliver applications and services to a high standard.

The scope of this team’s responsibilities includes:-

  • Manage the organisations infrastructure
  • Improve the management of the infrastructure to increase the speed and frictionless nature for delivering secure, high quality software
  • Ensure that the development lifecycle is correctly implemented from design > production > to support
  • Continually work on the potential silos between the development and operations teams
  • Automate wherever it is correct for the business to do so
  • Experienced and enthusiastic Systems Engineer, with Linux expertise (Redhat, Centos, Ubuntu)
  • A logical operator with well thought through project management ethics
  • An understanding of virtualization technologies such as Vsphere.
  • A genuine interest in managing Linux based applications and in modern methods of distribution/containerization.
  • Experience of trouble-shooting/problem solving within a multi-network protocol environment (for example, TCPIP, LDAP, NTP, DNS, APT, SYSLOG).
  • Experience in at least one scripting language is expected (BASH, Python, Perl), together with a familiarity of automation technologies such as Puppet, Ansible, or Chef (direct experience with these automation tools is not required, but rather an awareness and understanding of the principles).
  • A good operational understanding of Jenkins is essential.
  • A good understanding of security issues and concerns. You will have worked in an environment with a formal security standard and will have helped uphold that standard. You will have advised a team about the required steps to adhere to the standard and been part of security conversations across the business.

The Role

As a company dealing in payment transfers, security has always been of the utmost importance.  Semafone take a wider, holistic overview of their security infrastructure. We are looking to bring in someone capable of extending the awareness and understanding of security to all our Development Team’s functions.

Whilst the role will sit within the Development Team, the successful applicant will work closely with the Security Officer, Support Teams and the team that manages deployments. A majority of the work undertaken will fall under the banner of DevSecOps: ensuring that security best practices are adopted within the Development Team from the earliest possible stage, working individually with each team member to better understand their role in compliance with security standards.

You will have responsibility for building and maintaining the VMs into which our systems are deployed. You will be on hand for trouble-shooting and hardening the Linux OS on which the applications sit and will be responsible for extending the current monitoring solutions and reporting using Nagios, and ensuring that OS security patch processes are maintained.

You will also participate in how a build should be produced: that is, ensure that the deployment team have access to the necessary automated deployment environments using VMWare, along with automated provisioning. You will be expected to enforce best practice and security protocols, working closely with our Deployment Engineers. You will also be the link between the developers and the deployment team, raising awareness of security issues as the code is given to the Operations Team to deploy.

As the role expands, it will be necessary to consider new technologies and operating methodologies. As the company changes and grows, new concerns, such as efficiency and scalability, will come into play. You will research new technologies and be comfortable with how they fit alongside existing security procedures. An interest in automation techniques and container technologies will be encouraged in order that Semafone may reap the benefits of the advances made in efficient distribution and ease of support.

It will ultimately be up to you, working across the Development team and liaising across the business to ensure PCI compliance is considered at the earliest stage possible and that there is complete awareness around the impact that any new feature created will have on the compliance of security standards within infrastructure.

What we need from you

It is not required that you will have had significant experience with PCI compliance, although any familiarity with the subject would be a strong advantage. You must have an interest in learning about PCI, however, as it will be necessary to become an expert in the subject as part of your role.

What you’ll get from us

As we grow, and our customer base grows larger, security becomes a greater and greater concern. This role represents a perfect opportunity to guide the company’s holistic adoption of DevSecOps, a new and exciting area for us which will become incredibly important as our customer-base increases.

You will be the owner of how security best practice is implemented, and play a senior consultative role in our new methodologies. You will also have the opportunity to learn PCI compliance deeply, and be supported in this by the security team and management.

This is an integral and important role with a great scope for expansion as the company grows.
