Software Engineer - Graduate

Overall Responsibilities   

As a Software Engineer you will be responsible for designing and developing effective software solutions to meet clients’ requirements.

Here at Semafone, you’ll be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle. As part of the team you’ll be involved with the requirements gathering process, i.e. finding out the objectives of the proposed software solution.  Then the team ‘scopes’ the product, which involves identifying what needs to be developed, how it needs to be developed and when it should be developed by. You will also need to think about cross-platform integration, i.e. how the solution can be used across various different platforms and how the users interact with the product.

Once this has all been worked out, you will get stuck into the actual coding of the software system. During the development phase, automated unit testing is also conducted. This approach, which is known as test-driven development (TDD), essentially involves programming and testing in parallel, making the whole process much more efficient.

Once the development process is complete, more testing will be undertaken. This will involve conducting functional testing to ensure everything works properly and is run by our in-house test team.

Once a product has been developed and launched, you will also be responsible for detecting and fixing bugs. Finally, you will also work alongside a technical author to put together user manuals and other technical documentation.

The Team

Our Core team sits at the centre of our service-oriented platform and is comprised of four developers, an embedded tester and a team lead. As one of four teams totalling over 20 engineers, they are responsible for the nucleus of our solution which deals with the capture, storage, processing and retrieval of sensitive data.

There are several exciting new product enhancements in the pipeline for this growing team to work on over the next few months – these include greenfield development of a whole new product direction as well as adding new functionality to the existing products with the potential opportunity to re-design and re-write. Whilst these are ongoing the team will also maintain and modernise our existing platform with a strong focus on refactoring and removing technical debt that has accumulated over time, dealing with BAU support issues that crop up from time to time, security improvements and response to vulnerabilities. 

Our development team work to the principals of Agile.  Agile is a methodology that anticipates the need for flexibility and applies a level of pragmatism into the delivery of the finished product. Agile focuses on the clean delivery of individual pieces or parts of the software and not on the entire application and encourages the team to move forward together solving problems and learning constantly.

We really want you to have the ability and willingness to go the extra mile to meet many tight deadlines, and careful attention to detail is required to ensure the applications produced are reliable. Good communication skills and a professional attitude is vital as your help may be required when supporting the products during or after installation in the field.

Ideally you will have an interest in producing systems for the finance or payment industry, with an appreciation of suitable security, encryption and resilience for such systems.

  • Helping to test and perform code walkthroughs of other developer’s code
  • Helping the support team to overcome reported issues from Semafone clients
  • Liaising and providing feedback within the team
  • Demonstrate innovation and passion towards work
  • Flexibility to go the extra mile and perform extra work to complete the job
  • Desire to learn and stretch, keeping up to date with the latest trends and using these to drive product enhancements
